Why you should travel solo at least once in your life

Some of my best trips so far have been solo trips and I haven't regretted one of them yet. It can be tough to decide to go traveling on your own, but sometimes we have a choice to make. To not travel because no one has time to come with you or to take the leap and to just go on the trip, to just book the plane ticket and make memories on your own.

Solo in India

My first solo travel experience was exactly that. A friend of mine cancelled on our Iceland Trip Idea because she didn't have time to travel and so I had to make the decision to either not go or go on my own. At that moment, I realised that how I will answer this question will set me up on a certain kind of path in my life. Will I allow external factors and changing circumstances to affect my decisions and experiences I will make? Or will I adapt and still experience these epic moments and life lessons by just changing my perspective and adjust to the new situation?

I decided that I don't want to miss experiences and memories just because I had no one to go with me. I didn't want to wake up, when I was 80 years and regret not having to live my life to the fullest and made the spontaneous decisions that scared the shit out of me. I wanted to look back on my life and marvel at the memories and moments I made on my own and shared with strangers I met around the world.

Train travel in Sri Lanka

If I would have decided differently in 2018, I would have never seen the waterfalls in Iceland, the Taj Mahal in India, the elephants in Sri Lanka and the epic temples in Myanmar and many moments more. I wouldn't have met strangers on the street who turned into friends or experienced the kindness of strangers when I needed a bit of help. I wouldn't have met fellow travelers in trains, busses and hostels and got to known their story and dreams.

Besides the amazing experiences, I also grew personally by facing challenging situations and moments of doubt while traveling. But now I know that I will be fine whatever happens, as I can trust in myself and the ability to find my way out of any situation.

Traveling solo can seem scary and daunting but I haven't regretted any of my solo trips so far even though I had some moments of doubt and anxiousness. At the end of the day, the positive experiences massively outweigh the negative ones.

I want everyone to experience the high of coming back from a solo adventure. So here are 5 reasons why you should take the leap and go on your next trip on your own.
