Liechtenstein in 24 hours

Summer holidays are just around the corner and with Europe opening up again, it is the perfect time for your Roadtrip around Europe. I absolutely love to travel by car through Europe, as you can literally go to 3 or 4 different countries within 6 hours of driving. When I am planning a route, I always take a look and see what is on the way to the final destination. A lot of the times, you can split up your travel day by a short hike, a quick visit to a town you always wanted to see or a quick dip in a beautiful lake. When you are traveling through Europe, Liechtenstein might be only a small detour away.

Vaduz Castle

Top tip: Liechtenstein is accessible via Austria or Switzerland, so depending on where you travel to, it is worth to arrive either way as you save the money of the toll. I planned to drive through Austria towards Italy, so I approached Liechtenstein from the Austrian border.

Liechtenstein is a beautiful tiny microstate in the Alps. The official language is German and the main city is called Vaduz. As it is a microstate, it is a perfect destination to visit for a day, while traveling through and taking a break from driving all day. Hotels and Airbnbs are quite expensive in Liechtenstein, but I can recommend just stopping over in Austria, if you are on a budget. I drove 20 minutes into Austria and stayed at a beautiful family farm for one night.

Liechtenstein is a monarchy headed by the Prince of Liechtenstein, who resides in the Vaduz Castle. You can’t visit the castle but it is definitely worth a visit. You can drive up the mountain roads towards the castle. It will say at one point, that it is a private access road but you can just ignore that fact, as everyone is still driving up. You can park higher up the hill and walk 5 minutes down. Epic views are guaranteed when you walk one of the country lanes away from the castle.

One of the options, you have is to walk the hill down to Vaduz. Typical European houses and small pathways accompany your walk down into town. You can wander the streets and visit one of the many restaurants, which offer typical Swiss, Austrian food. You can also visit the art museum or the cathedral. After you visited the city, you can enjoy your walk back up the hill, back to your car.

If you want to hike a bit more and enjoy the nature, the Princes way is a popular hiking trail. You can find a lot of hiking trails on komoot.
